FAQ
What does a storage space for a motorhome cost?
Depending on type and region, CHF 55 to 125 for an outdoor space, 80 to 150 in a barn, 100 to 150 under a carport and 150 to 250 in a closed hall. Details under Storage prices.
How do I find a space near me?
Type a town or postcode into the search, choose a radius and filter by type of space, vehicle dimensions, power and security. Searching is free and needs no account.
Should I view the space before renting?
Yes, always. Check gate height and access with your own vehicle, make sure the floor is firm and dry, and clarify access times. Never pay a deposit before you have seen the space.
What belongs in the contract?
Start, duration or season, notice period, price, extras such as power, access times, key or code, liability and insurance, rules on working on the vehicle and overnight stays.
How is the vehicle insured in storage?
Under the owner's policy. Partial casco covers theft, hail, fire and natural hazards. With plates deposited, liability insurance is suspended; whether partial casco continues depends on the policy.
Can I deposit the number plates over winter?
Yes, at your canton’s road traffic office. The insurance premium is suspended for as long as the plates are deposited. Without plates the vehicle may not stand on public ground – which is why it needs a private storage space.
May I sleep in the stored vehicle?
Only if the provider allows it; the listing says so under “Overnight stays allowed”. Living in it permanently is not what storage is for.
How long does a year-round rental run, and how do I give notice?
Monthly notice periods are usual for year-round rentals, fixed terms for winter storage. Both belong in the written contract.
Do I need a permit to rent out?
Inside the building zone in an existing hall usually not. Outside the building zone, using a barn for vehicles is a change of use and needs a permit; the fire authority is often involved. Ask your municipality. More under Rent out your space.
As a provider, who is liable for damage to the vehicle?
The vehicle stays insured through its keeper. Damage caused by you or your building goes through your liability or building insurance; damage to goods in your care often has to be added as an extension.
Do I have to pay tax on rental income?
Yes, rental income is taxable. From CHF 100,000 total turnover a year, renting out storage spaces becomes subject to VAT.
Can I hide my address in the listing?
Yes. By default we show only the postcode, the town and an approximate radius on the map. You give the exact address only to the person you choose.
What does Caraplace cost?
Nothing. Searching, listing and contacting are free. No subscription, no commission, no hidden fees.
How do you prevent fraudulent listings?
We check every provider's first listing by hand before it appears. Providers confirm their email address. Any listing can be reported; after several reports it goes offline automatically until we have checked it.
Does Caraplace also offer spaces for boats, trailers or classic cars?
Yes. Many halls and barns take boats on trailers, trailers, classic cars and vans. In the search you choose the vehicle type.
