Wild camping and free overnight stays in Italy
Art. 185 of the Highway Code treats the motorhome like a car: sosta (parking) is allowed, campeggio is not. Sardinia bans free camping across the whole island.
Under Art. 185 of the Highway Code, parking a motorhome is not camping as long as it rests only on its wheels, discharges nothing and does not take excessive space. Municipalities may restrict parking.
Sardinia bans camping with a tent, caravan or motorhome across the whole island outside campsites, equipped stopover areas, rest areas at service stations and farm stays, and areas designated by municipalities (Art. 22 Regional Law 16/2017). Mere parking under Art. 185 is unaffected. For the other regions we have not yet verified a rule of their own.
The overview is guidance, not legal advice: municipal ordinances and signs on site take precedence.

Frequently asked questions
Can I sleep in a motorhome on a car park in Italy?+
Yes, as sosta: under Art. 185 of the Highway Code, parking a motorhome is not camping as long as it rests only on its wheels, discharges nothing and does not take excessive space. Municipalities may restrict parking by ordinance – watch the signs.
What is the difference between sosta and campeggio?+
Sosta is parking: only on the wheels, no discharge, no excessive space. As soon as levelling jacks, discharge or more space come into play, it is campeggio – regulated by municipalities and regions, in Sardinia with a ban outside designated areas.
What applies in Sardinia?+
Throughout Sardinia, camping with a tent, caravan or motorhome is prohibited outside campsites, equipped stopover areas, rest areas at service stations and farm stays, and areas designated by municipalities (Art. 22 Regional Law 16/2017). Mere parking under Art. 185 of the Highway Code remains allowed.
Can municipalities ban motorhomes from car parks?+
Municipalities may restrict parking (Art. 185 Highway Code). Whether a particular restriction is lawful, our sources do not say – on site, signage applies.
What fines are there?+
Our sources (Art. 185 Highway Code, Regional Law Sardinia 16/2017) give no fine amounts. What matters is to park rather than camp – and to check whether a municipal ordinance restricts parking.
Where do I find legal places in Italy?+
On the Place me map: official stopovers (aree di sosta) and campsites are always allowed; car parks get the national rule or, in Sardinia, the regional rule. The “Legal” filter hides red places.
The information comes from OpenStreetMap and from campers. Check signs and bans on site – the light is guidance, not legal advice. Caraplace accepts no liability for accuracy or currency; you stay at your own risk.
Only legal places on the map
The “Legal” filter shows only places with a green or amber light – official stopovers, campsites, farms and car parks in regions that allow or tolerate overnight stays.
