Wild camping and free overnight stays in Portugal
Where are you staying tonight? Portugal regulates overnight stays in a motorhome expressly in the Código da Estrada – with clear limits. Here is the rule with its source and the most popular spots.
Overnight stays in a homologated motorhome are permitted in Portugal. Where no municipal by-law applies, they are capped at 48 hours per municipality (art. 50.º-A Código da Estrada, Lei n.º 66/2021).
“Pernoita” means staying with occupants on board between 22:00 and 07:00. Camping with table, chairs or levelling legs stays banned, as do overnight stays in Natura 2000 and protected coastal zones.
This overview is guidance, not legal advice: signs on site and municipal by-laws take precedence.
