Winter storage for motorhomes and caravans in Switzerland
Winter storage for motorhomes, campervans and caravans: covered spaces in halls or barns, price guide in CHF, winterising checklist, contract points.
Winter storage means renting a space for the season, usually from October to April. The vehicle stands still for months – exactly when frost, damp, snow and sun do the most damage: seals harden, water freezes in pipes, the roof carries snow and the battery drains. A dry, ideally covered space prevents the usual spring surprises.
Hall, barn, carport or outdoor
A closed hall offers the best protection and usually power, lighting and cameras; it is also the most expensive. A farmer's barn is the affordable covered option – dry, but often with a natural floor and no power. A carport keeps off snow and UV but not frost and wind. An outdoor space is the cheapest; fenced and camera-monitored it is enough for many caravans, and a cover protects a motorhome.
What winter storage costs
Current Swiss listings give roughly these prices per month: outdoor CHF 55 to 125, carport CHF 100 to 150, barn CHF 80 to 150, hall CHF 150 to 250. Seasonal flat rates usually equal six to seven monthly rents. Power for battery maintenance is sometimes included, otherwise CHF 10 to 30 a month. Full figures in the guide Storage prices.
Book early
Covered winter spaces are allocated by November in many regions. Search in September and you have the choice; search in December and mostly outdoor spaces remain. On Caraplace filter the search by rental model "season / winter storage", vehicle size and power.
Winterising checklist
- Drain fresh, grey and black water tanks, boiler and pipes completely, leave taps open.
- Fully charge the leisure battery and disconnect it or connect a maintainer; same for the starter battery.
- Raise tyre pressure by about 0.5 bar, move the vehicle a little every few weeks.
- Close gas bottles, leave the fridge door open, stand cushions up, leave the interior dry and clean.
- In barns: protect engine bay and interior against rodents, leave no food.
- Ventilate regularly – even in a hall.
