Rent out your hall, barn or carport to campers

Over 110,000 motorhomes are registered in Switzerland, plus caravans, campervans and boats on trailers. Few owners have room at home, and covered storage is sold out in many regions – by autumn at the latest, when winter storage begins. If you no longer fully use a hall, barn, stable or carport, it can earn you a regular income.

What your space is worth

Rent depends on protection, equipment and region. Current listings and price lists give roughly these monthly ranges: outdoor CHF 55 to 125, carport CHF 100 to 150, barn CHF 80 to 150, closed hall CHF 150 to 250, more around Zurich and Geneva. What campers need

A motorhome is usually 6 to 8 m long, 2.3 to 2.5 m wide and 2.9 to 3.3 m tall. Gate height is decisive: under 3.3 m only vans and caravans fit. Add a firm, dry floor, room to manoeuvre and an access road that works with 3.5 tonnes. Nice to have: a socket, water for filling and the chance to move the vehicle now and then.

Permits, insurance, contract

A free storage agreement template to print is available here. Inside the building zone, storing vehicles in an existing hall is usually no problem. Outside the building zone, using a farm barn for non-farm purposes is a change of use and generally needs a permit, even without construction; in most cantons the fire authority signs off. Ask your municipality before the first listing. The stored vehicle stays insured under the owner's policy; check that your building and liability insurance cover the new use. Put start, duration, notice, price, extras, access and liability in writing. Rental income is taxable; above CHF 100,000 total annual turnover, VAT applies.
